Dominique's story: Small steps equal big results

At a routine visit to the family physician, Dominique Samuel’s sugar and blood pressure tests came back high. 

"I have diabetes," says Diana, his mother, "And I knew these numbers meant someday Dominique could also develop the disease."

"Dominique was gaining weight quickly," adds Diana, "And kids at school were starting to tease him - we knew we needed to do something."
"I wanted to do something to be healthier," says Dominique, "But I didn’t know how to do it."

Knowing that diabetes ran in the family, the Samuel's family doctor referred them to the lipid clinic at Dayton Children's. James Ebert, MD, the lead physician of the lipid clinic, gave them a list of foods to eat and the amount of calories to aim for each day.

"It’s important that families start with small, manageable steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle," says Dr. Ebert. "We typically tell families about the 5-2-1-0 prescription."

The 5-2-1-0 prescription is an easy way to remember - 5 fruits and vegetables each day, less than 2 hours of screen time such as television, computer or video games each day, at least 1 hour of activity each day and 0 sugary drinks. 

Dr. Ebert was amazed when Dominique lost five pounds between his first and second appointment.

"Our whole family took Dr. Ebert’s advice and have seen positive changes," says Diana, who lost 18 pounds.  Her fiancé lost 30 pounds.

"Dr. Ebert gave us small tips that have made a big difference," says Diana, "I bake and boil food instead of frying, and I don’t keep junk food in the house."

"The hardest part is not eating too many sweets - but we eat yogurt and fruit instead of candy bars," says Dominique, "I went four months without eating one candy bar and I’ve lost the taste for chips!"

And more important than losing weight, Dominique has learned how to maintain a healthy lifestyle by pairing proper nutrition with activity.

"My friends and I support each other - we play basketball and football together making sure we get at least an hour of activity each day," says Dominique.

"Dayton Children’s has been the hospital for all of my kids," says Diana, "They pay special attention to every child to make sure they get exactly what they need. Dominique needed some tips to get him started - and we’re seeing the results. I’m happy with the our family’s progress - I love Dayton Children’s."
